Ashley McBryde is worthy of role-model status. From her style, sound, band, and even her fans, there is nothing typical about this bluesy country artist who sold out Marathon Music Works on Thursday night.
The blue and purple haze of smoke twirled delicately in the stage lights. McBryde stood on stage with a sparkle in her eye as she struck the first chord to “Girl Going Nowhere.” The crowd stood teary-eyed and hanging on every line.
Looking around the room, there was an energy that was pulsating and distinctive. This was a room filled with music fanatics, artistic geeks, band dweebs, industry professionals, doctors, lawyers, mechanics, and hairdressers. And, they were all singing the lines of her chill worthy lyrics:
“You're not the first, you won't be the last. And you can tell us all about it when you come crawling back. That road you're on, just winds and winds. Your spinning your wheels and wasting your time.”
At that moment, Marathon Music Works wasn’t a room filled with “job descriptions and titles,” this was a room filled with people who had once been told that they wouldn’t “make it.” Their voices came together in a beautiful vocal mix and one statement was clear, “be thankful for the nerd or band geek that brought you here.”
